Creative response and documentation of InLight Richmond

1708 Gallery and Capital One invite photographers and video artists working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to submit work for our online album and exhibition at Capital One. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that document the installations, videos, performances and general spectacle of the InLight Richmond event held on Sept. 5th 2008 from 7pm-midnight are encouraged. The album will be linked to our website and will be curated by our InLight Curatorial Committee. The highlights of the album will be selected for an exhibition in the Town Center Gallery on the Capital One campus in Richmond, VA.

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to all professional and amateur, domestic and international photographers working with digital or traditional photography, film/video or combinations of both.

Jurors: InLight Curatorial Committee:

Awards: All artwork chosen for the exhibition will be printed and framed by 1708 Gallery. 1708 Gallery will retain the framed copy for promotional, marketing, print and exhibition purposes. A second print will be made and sent to the artists chosen for the Capital One site exhibition. However, if you have any specific parameters/requests for either printing or framing YOU will need to provide the printed/ and framed image to 1708 Gallery by Friday Oct. 10. The work will be returned at the end of the exhibition.

Important Dates:

• October 1, 2008: Notification of acceptance
• October 16, 2008: Exhibition opens in Town Center at Capital One West Creek campus
• TBD: Reception for artists and kick-off of InLight Richmond 2009!!

Submitting Entries for Jurying:
Submit a CD or DVD of your top ten photographs or film/video (9 minute max.) by Sept. 24, 2008
Please print and complete the entry form and include with your submission. Entries may be submitted on CD/DVD in person to: 1708Gallery, 319 W. Broad St Richmond VA 23220 or by mail: 1708 Gallery PO Box 12520 Richmond VA 23241 (postmarked no later than September 22, 2008)

Sales and Commission: 1708 Gallery will administer all sales during the Exhibition. The Gallery will retain a commission of 35% of the sales price of all artwork sold during the Exhibition. Artist will be paid 65% of any sales price by 1708 Gallery no later than 45 days following the conclusion of the Exhibition or the Gallery’s receipt of payment whichever is later. Sales tax will be collected as required by Virginia state law. The artist will remit to 1708Gallery a commission of 35% of the sales price of exhibited artwork sold within 60 days of the conclusion of the Exhibition if such sale results from or is otherwise attributable to the Exhibition

There is no entry fee but all artists accepted into the 1708inlight album and/or exhibition grant 1708 Gallery the following Use Rights:
By submission for jurying, artists grant 1708Gallery the right to use their images for the purpose of marketing the exhibition, marketing the gallery’s programs and subsequent display on the gallery’s website of past exhibitions. Artists grant the use of their image(s) as stated without further contact or compensation from 1708Gallery. Artist’s recognition is provided with use.

The Wearable InLight Artists:

Madison Fisk was born and raised on a farm in Keswick, VA. She attended her first year and a half of college at California Institute of the Arts. Madison began painting at an early age. After too much time with a brush in her hands, she began to explore sound and video instillation. Now, a third year sculpture major at VCU, most of her
work revolves around fabrics, metal, film and epoxy. Madison has one dog, Zero, who runs her life. Her dream is to one day remember what she went downstairs for.

Natalie Hakim since she can remember, has dreamed of being a fashion designer. In searchv of fulfilling her aspiration she now attends VCU as a fashion design major. She draws inspiration from both tangible and intangible things as her ideas continually change and evolve through the creation of a garment. She just completed her first few fast paced and exciting months in New York interning for an avant-garde and innovative fashion house. After graduation she looks forward to moving permanently to New York to begin designing and gain the knowledge and experience that she needs to someday start her own label.

Clarissa Berry is currently a senior in the Interior Design Department at VCU and will be graduating in May. She grew up in Haymarket, Virginia and has always been fascinated in creating something new and unique. Growing up she took close notes from her mom as she was busy getting ready for craft shows, sewing us matching outfits and knitting various items. For her ‘mystical dress’ the inspiration was drawn from nature and childhood memories of capturing lightning bugs in a rural setting. She has also been influenced by her design classes and the city of Richmond which exposed her to industrial design. This is reflected in the use of soft textures and flowing movement as well as the harsh metal-like appearance.

Alice Fine is a native of Richmond, Virginia. She is a rising freshman at VCUarts, after attending Open High. Fashion has dominated her interests since she was eleven years old. Alice pulls inspiration from many different sources, including early MGM movies and musicals, Jane Austen novels, modern architecture, and her peer's
artwork. Alice has participated in many Richmond fashion events, including Worn Again and Heidi Story fashion shows, where she works. Her future goals include entering the Fashion Design track at VCU, studying abroad, interning at small design houses, and participating in the fashion world as much as she can!

Katherine Jones is a freshman at VCUarts with plans to study fashion design. She learned how to sew when she was a little girl and designing developed into a passion as she grew up. By the time she was in high school Katherine was designing and creating formal gowns for herself and friends. She also loves to travel, style hair, read, and paint. Her camera is almost permanently attached to her hip and she is just as at home in stilettos as she am in comfy sweats and a tee-shirt. Many, many thanks to her mom for all her help, patience and inspiration.

Julien Archer is 16 and a junior at Trinity Episcopal High School. Julien has expressed his love for fashion through illustrations and ridiculous costume dress since he was a toddler. He was a self-taught sewer who refined his skills at Heidi Story in Carytown, where he sells hand-screened tees. His freshman year in high school Julien attended Appomattox Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology as a visual arts major. He showed a six-piece collection in the school’s first fashion show. Julien showed two designs at Worn Again III and participated in the VMFA Teen Caffeine Cafe Stylin’ show winning “best ready-to-wear.” He also participated in the 2nd annual ARGS fashion show, in which he won 1st place. For the past two summers he has worked for Frankie Slaughter, a local artist and designer, patchworking fabrics and brainstorming designs. When Julien graduate from Trinity he hopes to attend Fashion Institute of Technology.

Jennifer Kim is a sophomore student at the Virginia Commonwealth University, studying Fashion Design. She has always been passionate about fashion and art ever since she was a young girl. She attended Osbourn Park High School and is now pursuing her dreams to become a successful fashion designer and entrepreneur.
Inspired by haute couture fashion and cultural influences, Wearable art is her first piece of garment ever made.

Shanice White is a 17- year- old aspiring fashion designer and freshman at VCU. Born and raised in Blacksburg, Virginia, White is a self- taught seamstress. Through her work, she hopes to communicate experiences and observations that are both personal and relatable on a larger scale, such as the relationship between the artist and their materials, the sources of those materials and the constant paradoxes we face in everyday life. Using fabrics (re-purposed and new) as her primary medium, White hopes to create garments that are of professional quality, but whose designs reflect their handmade origins.

Samantha Heyl grew up in Richmond and revered the city so much she decided to attend school here. She ended up in the Interior Design Department at the VCU School of the Arts and graduated in the spring of 2008. Presently, Samantha works for Beyond Ordinary Boundaries Architecture downtown, but still finds herself dabbling in other fields of art. For her, being an artist today is about being able to touch on every form of art, not just one “department”. She finds herself utilizing interior design, painting, graphic design, fashion, and sculpture in her work and believes that all around each form leads to better ideas and different ways of thinking. Samantha loves what she does and vows never to stop creating.

Sara Ben-Abdallah who has been designing costumes and clothes since high school is thrilled to pair up with Fritz Reuter, a newcomer in the fashion world. They both exchanged a lot of ideas for this competition until they settled on modeling their design after a light bulb. Fritz attends the University of Mary Washington where he studies biology. Sara attends Virginia Commonwealth University where she studies Cinema. The pair met in grade school and has been close friends and creative partners for 15 years. Sara and Fritz are very honored to be a part of this competition and would like to thank their friends and Thomas Edison.

Brittany Jones is currently a full-time undergrad student at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA pursuing a dual degree in Sociology and African American Studies, following an Interior Design degree. From sitting in a middle school classroom, the world of art has been her interest. From drawing, painting and composing literature, to architectural designs, advertising and music—they have all captured her imagination. She wants to provoke a change for the better in the art world, generally in society and more importantly to educate and enlighten each individual.

Julia Hodges is a senior at VCU studying Communication Arts. Her aspirations with her career are editorial illustration, writing and illustrating children’s books, and product packaging. Fashion and sewing are a lot different from the usual paper and paint of her major, so she is hoping to shake up my two dimensional routine with something new.

Alex Curley is a junior at Henrico High school. I am in the Visual art center at my high school. He is 17 years old and volunteered to help out at the Wearable X show last year. He is really excited that 1708 is holding another show! Alex would love to be able to show my love of art and fashion design by participating in 1708's eleventh Wearable Art show.

Olga Lader a 29 year old, is from St. Petersburg, Russia where she earned Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in classic sculpture and a minor in teaching. After school she worked as a jewelry designer, but her heart was in fashion. Shortly thereafter she enrolled in the Art Academy of St. Petersburg, Russia where she studied fashion design for three years. In December 2006, she immigrated to the US and have been writing / blogging about the fashion industry for the Russian Fashion Network while working on her portfolio. She have covered the last three NY Fashion weeks, but hopes to soon be there as a designer.

Grace DuVal a third year Sculpture student at VCU School of the Arts, has been playing dress-up since the time she could walk. From those beloved hand-me-downs emerged an endless passion for thrift shops, vintage, and making everything clothing related. From tearing apart and reconstructing thrift shop finds to building
elaborate garments, using vintage dress patterns and creating her own, Grace has made it all. In 2007 she won the 10th annual Wearable Art fashion show in Richmond, VA and opened the SEAMLESS: Computational Couture fashion
show in Boston, MA in 2008. No matter what, Grace could not survive without stars, dancing, thrift shops, and, above all, her phenomenal friends and family. Thank you one and all.

Meredith Argenzio has always been interested in fashion, art, and design She is a junior in the Center for the Arts at Henrico Highschool in the visual arts program. She took her first sewing lessons in middle school, with Heidi of Heidi Story. Last year, her best friend Alex Curley and she organized a fashion show at Henrico Highschool,
showcasing student designs in many different areas of fashion. Meredith has a few favorite modern designers, but she takes most of her inspiration from the antique styles of the past. She wanted her dress to be rustic, elegant and almost alive.

Hannah Sullivan 18, is already an experienced participant of the noted “Wearable Art fashion show.” Her junior year at Saint Gertrude High School she created a recyclable wearable art fashion entirely out of soda cans: cut and flattened into panels. Then in her senior year, she entered a fashion show at VMFA where she created a piece inspired by an African mask, for which she won an award for her Mastery of Materials. She will be attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in the fall. She hopes to transfer to VCU's noted art school. Her artistic interest is in Graphic Design and Photography.

Francis Scott Horner is a Richmond Virginia based artist. He is studying Sculpture at VCU and is currently the Art Director for Poictesme, the student art review. Francis has shown in Gallery 5’s Repressed II: Art on Paper, as well as the Student Art show at the Anderson Gallery for 2 years running. He has also shown in Do Not: Fold,
Bend, Spindle or Mutilate at the Washington Pavilion of the Arts, where his piece is in their permanent collection. He has assisted artists such as John Baymore. Francis has also been an assistant at a local pottery studio where he helped set up shows.

Kevin Blow was born 11, December 1986 in Franklin, Virginia, just outside of the area of his upbringing, Southampton County, Virginia. He remembers as a child always being drawn to the beauty of the human body, specifically the way different peoples adorn it. His interest in visual art has lead him to experiences with the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, a BFA degree in Fashion Design at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a semester abroad at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Kevin is planning to enter to the fashion industry in the near future.

Holly Sullivan (working with Brittany Shade) is a student at VCU entering her senior year in the Fashion Design program. Most of her design influence comes from the work of comic book artists like Jamie Hewlett and Ben Templesmith. She particularly loves conveying contrast in her designs through the innovative use of color and texture. Apart from fashion, Holly enjoys reading graphic novels and learning about various subcultures;
especially those which influence her own style using contrast and variety as a form of beauty. She also has duel citizenship in England and hopes to start her fashion career in London or New York City.

Brittany Shade (working with Holly Sullivan) is a senior in the Sculpture and Extended Media, Crafts, and Art History
departments at VCU. In my work childhood fantasies, organic designs, and lightare the most prevalent inspirations. I’m all about the details, small and minute. Details, especially mistakes that come through the process of making, are what make objects so interesting and unique. These processes of course come through the hands. I have to touch every aspect of my pieces with my bare hands; it needs to be a personal relationship between me and my materials so that you may have a personal relationship with my pieces.

Adam Krehbiel Sculptor, painter, designer, inventor and composer/musician, playing over thirty-two instruments, including vocal operatic in four languages. Adam keeps very busy as a student of VCU Fine Arts Sculpture. Adam has been designing garments for both men and women since the age of about twelve. Adam also invents his own MIDI (Musical Instrument Definition Interface) controllers for use of mixing/ controlling music live. Adam’s Garment for this year showcases his new Atlantis and Lucerno Technology. Atlantis, a wireless MIDI Controller that allows the garment wearer to control the musical composition played live by her finger tips, and Lucerno, a luminescent string that Adam has invented in conjunction with a Luminescence Corporation with the goal of saving energy.

Mauren Pereira has been designing and sewing since time immemorial. Or at least that's how it feels. Since her first project of a black-and-white polka dot baby doll dress just like the one in Clarissa Explains it All, clothing and media has been the center point of her creative voice. A Theatre VCU alumnus and award-winning costume designer, she is currently enjoying her third season as a costumier for the Richmond Ballet, and freelances in theatrical and couture design.

Rebecca Witt is an undergraduate sculpture major at VCU, and is now entering her final year. She is graduating with a double minor in crafts and art history. Her work has been displayed at the semi-annual arts festival Spiral, and shown at the ADA Gallery. She has been involved with the local art collective FEAST, which shown in several shows at galleries such as 1708, and exhibited at Scope New York. She is currently showing at Grape and Cheese, an independent wine store uptown. This will be her second year participating in wearable art, and she is excited to contribute to the Richmond InLight event.

Wearable InLight Judges:

Tom Papa is an attorney, artist and one of the founders of Plant Zero based in Richmond, VA. He is also a developer in downtown Richmond and a supporter of the arts and artists in Richmond.

Lori Waran as a result of growing up in Richmond, has developed an appreciation for
everything local—local art, local tomatoes, local trends and, yes, local news. As a
current publisher for Style Weekly, Richmond’s Alternative Newsweekly, Lori is able
to contribute to a little piece of Richmond history every day. Lori also feels fortunate
to be involved in other Richmond publications which are published by Style Weekly
including Belle, Homestyle and Richmond Giving.

Henry Swartz graduated with an undergaraduate degree in Fashion Design from Pratt Institute. He designed dresses and sportswear outside of Philadelphia for Bobbi Rodgers Industries. He then began teachin for the Fashion Design program at VCU while earning earned a masters degree in Costume Design. He left VCU to teach at the University of North Texas and later at at Washington University as chair of the department. He has done freelance work in Dallas as well as designing the private label collection for Knights Catalogue. Henry now teaches at VCU in the Fashion Department

Joe Seipel is the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies at VCU. His previous position was chair of the department of Sculpture at VCU for seventeen years. His own studio production ranges from conceptually based objects to multimedia pieces and robotics. He had exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Frankie Slaughter after nearly a decade of living in Asia Frankie returned to Virginia where she redefined her career based on her relationship to the thoughts and feelings from her time in Asia. Her art brought forth adornments from wearable garments to sculptural pieces such as ceramic necklaces and paper clothing.

Harry Kollatz is the senior writer for Richmond Magazine, the host for the Richmond Magazine Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts and a co-founder of The Firehouse Theatre Project.

Sunny Zhao created this piece using footage he made during one long afternoon in Richmond, VA. This sequence of images inspired by the James River was the catalyst for sound track Zhao commissioned for the work.

Paper Clouds / Fissure

This looped video projection shows white paper being crumpled into a ball and reopened. The speed of the video is altered making it hypnotic to watch, much like a fire. The hands crumpling the paper are concealed, making the image strange and detached, the cause of the crumpling not immediately evident.

Fissure an installation that consists of a bed illuminated from within. The artist has replaced a mattress with a large-scale light box, which has in turn, been carefully disguised by soft translucent quilters' stuffing. Unmade, translucent, bed sheets, activated by the light emanating within, conjure contradictory feelings of presence and absence.

Elemental and Water Wheel are single-channel video projections that incorporate sound. Both works explore simple forms in nature and familiar objects and the pulse and rhythm of these forms.

These three video stills demonstrate instances where natural light creates particularly harsh settings. Grainger sets his camera up trained on these sites and then situates himself within this sharp light, moving along or within the path of the rays. He intentionally places himself within the light so that his face and figure are indistinguishable, almost like an over-exposed photograph. In this still, where the band of light is somewhat narrow, Grainger’s movements are slow and controlled as he inches along the wall.

These two photographers collaborate on this “exquisite corpse” process. One takes a photograph and sends to the other, who takes a photograph in response. The resulting pair of images comprises a single work. This back and forth process continues over a period of time until a group of images has accumulated. THe works will be projected large-scale onto one of the designated outdoor walls and will be accompanied by a sound component, which is also the product of a give-and-take collaboration. Jean-Yves Theriault and Matt Warren of Montreal and Hobart, Tasmania collaborated on the sound component.

Each artist uploaded footage into a designated sight on the internet where it could be downloaded and deconstructed. This snippet of a larger project explores the universal need to dream. Starry Night, a stop action video, consists of digital drawings that will are inspired by walking in an unlit terrain in France on a starry night.

El Alacrán, meaning The Scorpion, is about carnival in Havana in general, and particularly the comparsa—a Cuban music and dance style with roots in the Congo—that was founded in 1908 and dedicated to Yemaya, Yoruba Goddess of the Seas. In Cuba, comparsa also refers to an association of musicians and dancers who come together to make music especially for carnivals, but also for other occasions. This documentary examines El Alacrán’s legendary history and its importance within the carnival tradition in Havana.

Requiem is a film of approximately five minutes duration. It is centered on an a capella round, by Hayden, called PERFECT LIGHT, sung by an amateur group of women singers. It is set in an ethereal, abstract non-place, filled with flowing tubes of sheer fabric. It is an installation at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts by the sculptor Katherine Kavanaugh. The concept behind the film is that it is created by a fictional character in a novel by artist. The novel is titled The Marketplace of the Dead, and is in revision.

Yang’s multi-part light installation features cyanotype drawings mounted in lightboxes. Yang’s work is light-inspired on two levels. The “Phosphor” series combines the cyanotype photographic process with photo-emulsion and vellum stencil silkscreen printing techniques. Yang uses cyanotyping to color and reproduce figurative contour drawings. Instead of negatives, she uses ink drawings on duralar and the solarization process uses the sun’s effect on UV-sensitive paper as proxy for printmaking inks. The sun makes the image. These are then installed in light boxes, which magnifies the role of light.

Members of this collective group, organized by VMFA Fellowship winner Diane Cavanaugh, are roving galleries of sorts. Each member wears, on some part of the body like on the shoulder-as seen here, a miniature installation, complete with lights. This performance / installation will be roving as members will wander throughout the evening from one site to the next.

Glimmer is a store front installation and will remain on view for 3-4 weeks. The dark outlined plant forms that you notice in the foreground are vinyl forms applied directly to the window (they are not permanent). A large sheet of handmade paper embedded with this same form hangs form the ceiling and is backlit with floodlights. A series of smaller sheets hangs behind the larger one. Each also contains abstracted elements of the main form – the vinyl form on the window. Spider webs are projected onto these sheets. These projections spill off the sides of the sheets onto the walls themselves.

This installation is part of the artist's larger body of work that is interested in the sanctification of the small, the discarded, the unimportant and the minute. Object: Sanctify began with letters to friends and family asking them to "give up" an object in their life that they kept "only because of the promises that they had made to the object." The artist promised to be the keeper of these objects, to watch over them - appointing herself "The Guardian of the Discarded." These collected objects will be installed in a wooden shrine with a luminaria trail leading to it, as if it were a holy place.

This installation will explore the depths of patterns and how they communicate between one another. Animations containing conversational, abstract, organicand geometric information will be combined to create a constantly chenging series of patterns. A Participant Performance Machine... A steel frame is thrust into the air, supported by vectors from below. The space frame is capped by a myriad of small solar collectors, which capture light from the sun during the day. This project allows students from area schools to participate in a major public art event that will take place in downtown Richmond.

InLight RICHMOND is a celebration of 1708 Gallery’s 30th anniversary and a collaborative effort between local arts and community organizations in central Virginia to increase visibility and appreciation of the arts. Modeled after Paris' Nuit Blanche, InLight RICHMOND is an all-night celebration exhibiting a spectacle of multi-media installations and performances. The Roving Spectacle participants come from various art education programs in the Richmond metro area.

Young Audiences • Arts for Learning • Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts have partnered to design a series of workshops in which area students will work with YAV teaching artists Mim Scalin and Robert Walz to create exciting moving sculptural objects based on the theme of ‘light’ to be used during the Roving Spectacle. Thanks to Celia Fay who helped sponsor this program.

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond students will be bring their large puppets designed for just such a moving spectacle in their summer workshops.

The SPCA will have artistic four-leggers running around helping light things up. And will join us from the Library’s Family Area with original works from kids showing up for fun there.

Capoeira Resistencia brings an Afro-Brazilian athletic cultural dance, music and samba spectacle with aspects from the world famous Carnival one of the world’s original “Roving Spectacles”

The Family Fun Area at the main branch of the Richmond Public Library will include picnic space, the SPCA Tail Wag’n and art making tables from YAV, VAC and the Science Museum of Virginia’s Skylab. Food and drink vendors will also be on site from 6-8pm, suitable for all ages.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

1708 Gallery invites artists working in ALL media and disciplines to submit proposals for InLight RICHMOND. Modeled after Paris' Nuit Blanche, InLight RICHMOND is a celebration of 1708 Gallery’s 30th anniversary and Richmond’s first annual light-inspired contemporary arts happening.

From 7pm, Friday September 5, 2008 to midnight the 300, 200 and 100 blocks of W. Broad Street in Richmond, VA will serve as a site specific arena for art. Various locations within these blocks have been identified as primary and secondary sites with walls, parking lots, storefronts, doorways and median strips as possible platforms for artistic engagement. For details and images of sites, please click here. Artists are also welcome to explore roving performances/installations (i.e. the street as canvas). Select sites will showcase installations that remain on view throughout the evening as well as works that can remain on view through November 3 and possibly longer). Others sites will target performances and installations that will rotate over the course of the night.

The event will be a spectacle of multi-media installations and performances. Light is the theme, so all work proposed should be inspired by light in some way. Any interpretation of light is welcome, from light as medium to light as abstract idea. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged but not required. We will consider existing work, as well as proposals for new projects. InLight also welcomes, but does not require, green practices.

Each of the sites will have certain technical and electrical provisions available to the artists. Technical specs for each of the sites will be listed on our site link. Any technical needs (equipment and/or electricity) beyond what is available for each location should be provided by the artist and should be detailed in the proposal. Inspired by Nuit Blanche Paris and other similar international events, this is a big, all night celebration of the arts which will take place on the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Broad Street on First Friday. Traffic on Broad Street will be re-routed for the event, which may include additional venues beyond the designated area. InLight will begin at 7 PM and end at midnight.

Possible Elements:

Broad Street as Canvas - installation art featuring projections and other light-inspired art with an emphasis on the buildings within the designated district. Digital Images: Send 10 to 20 images in jpeg format only - no larger than 1024 pixels in any direction at 300dpi. In addition to the jpegs, you may send a PowerPoint presentation of the same images. InLight Neighborhood - Broad Street as Canvas

Site A. Façade/Window Galleries -
1708 Gallery - 319 W. Broad St.

1. Artists are invited to address the facade and the 6 windows above the first floor gallery windows. The 2nd and 3rd floors of the building are apartments. Pending permission of the residents, the interior of the 2nd and 3rd floors may be accessible to the artists as well (ie. performance, video or installation could be in the top 6 windows, or window galleries, of the building as well as the exterior of the building). Note: an exhibition will be taking place inside the gallery so any treatment to the façade must not interfere with the 1st floor windows.

2. Technology available: standard electrical outlets will be available inside the apartments, also electrical power will be provided for building exterior for creative treatment of the façade.

3. Duration: Any interior installations in the 2nd and 3rd floor window galleries will only be available the day of the event. Creative treatment of the façade may be permitted to remain operational for up to 30 days pending approval of 1708 Gallery.

B. Storefront Gallery - Sound of Music – 321 W. Broad St

1. Artists are invited to create a light-inspired installation for the gallery or use the gallery to showcase their artwork (or work of a small group of individuals) of any medium, including but not limited to performance, video, painting and sculpture.

2. Technology available: standard 120V electrical outlet(s) will be provided.

3. Duration: Work may remain in the storefront gallery up to 3-4 weeks (to be determined by Sound of Music Studios).

Site C. Quirk’s Rooftop/Opposite Wall/Parking Lot –
311 W. Broad St

1. Quirk’s Rooftop
i. Pending approval of property owners, the rooftop of Quirk will be converted into a performance site for the duration of the event. Artists are encouraged to propose light-inspired performances the last anywhere from a few moments to 15 minutes. Sound may be a part of the performance, however, projecting the sound will be up to the artists (megaphones and alternatives to traditional sound equipment is encouraged but not required)
ii. Technology available: stage lighting and standard 120V electrical outlets. No sound equipment will be provided.
iii. Duration of performance: brief to 15 minutes are encouraged, however longer performances will be considered.

2. Wall Opposite of Quirk’s Rooftop
i. The wall will be used as a video wall. Artists are encouraged to submit video, animation or other video works to be projected directly onto the large brick wall, so the dark red brick as projection screen should be taken into consideration (dark videos will not show up very well). The video projection will fill the entire wall, or as much of the wall as possible. The projector will be fed videos from multiple artists on a loop, so work may be exhibited multiple times during the duration of the evening. Artists are encouraged to submit multiple videos for consideration as well.
ii. Technology: One video projector and dvd player.
iii. Duration of Video Wall: Temporary - videos will be displayed the night of the event only. Sound will not be available to accompany video.
iv. Duration of video to be included in video loop: artists are encouraged to submit video of short duration (3 minutes or less), however, longer videos may be considered.

3. Quirk’s Parking Lot
i. Pending approval of property owners, the parking lot will be converted into a performance site for the duration of the event. Artists are encouraged to propose light-inspired performances the last anywhere from a few moments to 15 minutes. Sound may be a part of the performance, however, projecting the sound will be up to the artists (megaphones and alternatives to traditional sound equipment is encouraged but not required). The fence shown in the picture is permanent and may be addressed in the artwork, but the fence cannot be removed. Any alterations to the fence are subject to approval by the property owners.
ii. Technology available: stage lighting and standard 120V electrical outlets. No sound equipment will be provided.
iii. Duration: performances may be brief to 15 minutes, although longer performances may be considered.

2. Technology available: standard electrical outlet(s) may be provided upon request. No sound equipment will be provided however artist may improvise as needed for sound.

3. Duration: Performances may be very brief or may last as long as the duration of the event, provided access to the door is made available if needed by the business owner, residents of the building or any individual who wishes to enter or leave the doorway. Installations must be removed at the end of the event.

Site S. Dual Video Walls-
between 310 and 316 W. Broad St

1. Two large opposing walls are available for large scale video projection. We encourage artists to submit video, animation or other video work that utilizes both walls simultaneously. Depending on submissions, multiple work may be put on a loop and exhibited multiple times throughout the duration of the event. Artists should keep in mind that videos will be projected directly on to the dark brick walls. The ground may also be considered as a location for performance and/or installation as part of the projections and/or as separate submission. The fence may be addressed as part of the installation/performance, however no permanent alterations are subject to property owner’s approval.

2. Technology: Two video projectors and dvd players will be projected simultaneously. Sound may be made available, depending on submissions and artists requests. Stage lighting may be made available at artists request (sound and stage lighting provisions are not guaranteed and are subject to approval by 1708 gallery)

3. Duration of Dual Video Walls: Temporary - videos will be displayed the night of the event only.

Site U. Boarded up Storefront and doorway – 323 W. Broad St.

1. Pending approval of the property owner, the area boarded up may be made available for a light inspired installation, mural and/or performance(s).

2. Technology available: standard electrical outlet(s) may be provided upon request.

3. Duration: variable depending on nature of work. It may be possible that any treatment to the boards will remain indefinitely.

OTHER SITES NOT LISTED ABOVE

1. One side of the street and sidewalks on both sides of the street from the 100 to 300 blocks of W. Broad St. will be available for spontaneous performance and temporary installations, light-inspired sculptures, etc. All ideas/works of art should be submitted for approval.
2. Three Median Strips – one on each block – will be available as a stage of sorts and lend themselves to parades, fashion shows and such. All ideas should be submitted for approval and will be choreographed into the larger chain of events.
3. Light-inspired hats/costumes and such are strongly encouraged. No approval needed.
4. Possible addition of a video projection site on east-facing wall above Comfort restaurant. Pictures and additional information will be posted shortly.
5. Sound Installations have not been addressed at any of the sites above, however, we are accepting applications for sound installations (roving or stationary). Please submit ideas for approval. Electricity can be provided, however additional technical equipment should be provided by the artist.
